Air-to-Air missile launcher for carrying the AIM-9 Sidewinder Missile and similar sized munitions or instrumentation pods.
The LAU-7 series of guided missile launcher is a rail launcher originally designed to carry the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile family and instrumentation pods. The launcher carries and internal cooling source for infrared missile seeker cooling and a power supply.
The LAU-7 can be adapted and upgraded to carry and launch additional munitions similar in size to the Sidewinder, including AIM-132 ASRAAM, IRIS-T and others.
There are numerous variants of the LAU-7 integrated with the F/A-18C-F Hornet/Super Hornet, F/A-18A/B Hornet, AV-8B Harrier, AH-1W SuperCobra and AH-1Z Viper (SuperCobra).
The LAU-7/A-6, /A-7, B/A, B/A-1, C/A, D/A and E/A variants carry and launch AIM-9M and instrumentation pods.
The LAU-7D/A, E/A, and F/A variants feature digital power supplies and are integrated with AIM-9X.
LAU-7C/A, E/A, and F/A include the Pure Air Generation System (PAGS) for seeker head cooling. All other LAU-7 variants contain an internal nitrogen bottle.
